The Nationwide Testing Agency (NTA) in India administers the UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test), a national admission examination. The exam is given to ascertain applicants’ eligibility for junior research fellowships (JRF) and assistant professorships at Indian institutions and colleges. The UGC NET exam measures a candidate’s teaching skills as well as their knowledge and research prowess in a particular field. The exam is divided into two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, and it uses multiple-choice questions. A master’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 55% of the possible points is required to be eligible to take the UGC NET exam (or 50% for SC/ST/PwD applicants).

National Eligibility Test (NET) The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India administers the National Eligibility Test (NET) to all Indian citizens to evaluate their eligibility for the position of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian institutions and colleges. Twice a year, in June and December, the NET exam is given.

There are two papers in the exam: Paper 1 and Paper 2. While Paper 2 assesses the candidate’s subject-specific knowledge, Paper 1 gauges their broad knowledge and aptitude for research. Each paper is three hours long and consists of multiple-choice questions.

A Master’s degree or its equivalent in a relevant topic from a recognised university with a minimum of 55% marks (or 50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) is required to take the NET exam. The NET exam is thought of as an essential eligibility requirement for the award of JRF as well as for the hiring of Assistant Professors in colleges and universities.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) The University Grants Commission (UGC) in India bestows the coveted Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) on young academics who are engaged in research related to their area of study. Candidates who pass the National Eligibility Test (NET), administered by the National Testing Agency, are given the JRF award (NTA).

The JRF grant gives the recipient financial support for two years so they can conduct research in their area of study. If the JRF prize recipient meets the requirements of the relevant university, they are eligible for direct admission to PhD programmes at universities and colleges. Young scholars have the opportunity to follow their research interests and develop their field of study through the highly competitive and prestigious JRF grant.
